From time to time the old body starts aching either from a cold, allergies, etc. and most people are like me-hate to go to the doctor. I have found that some medications are too strong for my body and cause me to be sluggish and as a result I usually never complete a prescription. I have some friends who have no insurance so when they require medications, they can't obtain them so last week a few friends were over and we started researching natural medicines. One neighbor is of Indian decent and really swears by natural medications so we wanted to see if anything validated some of her beliefs, therapies, etc. The best website we found was NatMedTalk.com

It is a Health Forum covering several illnesses and diseases such as Diabetes, Women's Health, Cancer, Vision, Nutrition and much more. I enjoyed Alternative Therapies and got interested in a lot of Acupuncture information which was provided. The site is fairly active and has over 1,000 members. There is also a Forum for Money Saving Tips and I will be reviewing this topic regularly because as the economy worsens I become more frugal but the tips are very useful and creative.

I would highly recommend anyone concerned about a health issue to bookmark NatMedTalk. The site is very easy to navigate, easy to read and understand and unlike other sites, the Health Forum is very thorough. Going back to the site now, time to read about yoga. Been pondering a yoga class for a long time but want to read the benefits of yoga first.

Still Waiting For New Template

When I began this blog, I had a specific design, format and blog in mind but it has taken the designer awhile to show me the design I requested and that finally happened today! Yeah! The new blog will still have the same name just a different and fresh, hip look and daily posts. This month has been difficult as I have been in the hospital for one month and then scheduled to start a new treatment which has had me going back and forth to the hospital. My husband is a soldier so to have him blog in my place would be hmmm well not quite sure what would have been the result but it may not have been good but there may have been a few good recipes on here. I am still in and out of the hospital so until January I am going to dedicate this blog to contests. Not Impressed With Corporation Bailouts When Americans Can Barely Afford Good Health Insurance!

When I was younger I used to always hear my elders ask, "what is this world coming to?" As a child I didn't have the answer nor did I have any idea what wrongs were taking place in the world. As long as the world had macaroni and cheese, pizza, Dr. Pepper, candy (lots of candy), movies, Barbie dolls and big wheels, then the world according to me was perfect. But boy does childhood fly by and now I ask myself the same question, "just what is the world coming to?" Almost every day lately when listening to the news or picking up a newspaper, I can't avoid hearing how the government is being asked to bail a company, corporation, etc. out. At first I thought our government was doing a wonderful thing but now it is getting ridiculous!

Back in October I was at a training in beautiful Orlando, FL and that evening there was a documentary on about Americans Without Health Insurance. I can't remember the title but because I'd like you all to see it, I will try my best to find it and post here at a later time. The documentary brought tears to my eyes throughout the 2 hour show not only because I know what it is like to need a good doctor or good healthcare but not be able to obtain it due to lack of health insurance but because what human can not relate to another's pain and suffering and want better for them? Some parts of the show still stick out in my mind. There was a gentleman from Texas-worked hard all his life and had a disease almost like scoliosis and was in horrible pain. The doctors he was seeking really never did much for him because his insurance wasn't good. Things got so bad for him that he was having to go to Mexico just for medications. After being persistent he finally got some hope from a University and after examinations, he was considered for treatment by them and surgery. Surgery that his other physician should have recommended long ago. Thanks to the university, he is now able to hold his child which until after surgery he had never been able to hold. Another story is of a couple who her husband had suffered a stroke and his health only continued to get worse and worse. No one really did anything to help him improve or to prolong his life. His wife applied for him to get Medicare to help them pay for good healthcare but that would be a long wait. His wife had to watch him slowly die in pain, Medicare was approved days after his death. Another couple, his wife had cancer. Because of medical bills, they had already sold everything they had and now would be getting ready to sell their home, not knowing where they would live. They shed no tears but not because they didn't hurt but because losing everything was so familiar for them now. You've heard similair stories and may have been or even known someone affected by no medical or not good medical insurance and I think that is why I have had enough of the bailout crap!

I have lived in Germany for 3 years and I am in the hospital almost monthly for my disease but I am impressed by the fact that here in Germany- everyone gets health insurance. The poor get the same medical care, etc. as the rich. Guess who provides this? Yes, the government for the most part. If you are poor here in Germany, your quality of life is still pretty much important to everyone and guaranteed the doctors will do all they can for you. No one is turned away. There is no county hospital to take the poor, everyone gets help! Don't get me wrong- I love the USA but somewhere something is wrong! We a POWERFUL and WEALTHY country yet we say we can't provide good health insurance for the poor BUT we can bailout corporations for millions of dollars?! Time after time again! Hmmmm interesting. Yes there is Medicaid and other insurance for the poor but take some time and read about the stories of those on state insurance. It's better than nothing but why can't we throw some of those millions into their pot and get better healthcare for those people? Why limit them to less healthcare than those with good insurance? And Medicare? If you don't know anything about it, it sounds wonderful...like a good thing,huh? Well, it is! But for many, and I means thousands- it is not a good thing at all. There is a waiting period for Medicare and by the time that comes, many of these people have died. It is sad. If you are sick enough to get Medicare, it is usually, not always, but usually because you have a chronic condition. Chronic is usually urgent so why does our government think you can wait? Wait in more pain...some wait to die! It does make me angry because sometimes I think people are not valued as they should be.

The ones who do have insurance still sometimes don't get a good deal as their insurance only covers the bare necessities regarding healthcare. Depending on your illness....you may lose all you possess just to get MRIs, needed surgery, medications, etc. A reality that is hard to swallow and we should not even have to have at all in our country! I sure hope things change with the next Presidency.

I once wrote a newspaper article about the homeless and I always remember a quote from a lady I hung out with most of the day named Wanda and that is that everyone is just one paycheck from being homeless. She is so right. Today we can have a wonderful job and say, "it will never happen to me" but you just never know. Hell I never thought at 32 years old I would be out of work due to a new diagnosed disease and on Medicare myself.

While I am pissed, I am blessed as I have mentioned in a blog below because my insurance is good and I get above quality care. However just because I am taken care of doesn't mean I turn my head from the needs and sufferings of others nor will I ever. I hurt for them and if I can ever make a difference, I will! I am just ranting today because we need to put money towards some other things. I once figured if we had the money, we'd do it but now that I hear about all these bailouts and bailout considerations, I figure if we are going to go deeper in debt as a country, let's do it for some good causes- Healthcare, Education, Military Funding, Health Research, etc...etc. Make a difference on the important things in our country-Our People because when it comes down to it, they are the backbone of America! Every person, man, woman and child.

I hope to offend no one I just have a heart and am disappointed as many are on the same issue. Just tonite I started thinking about it more because I have heard about bailouts almost all day. Although this is not a GOOD post it is still good as it brings awareness. Please comment and let me know your thoughts. Are the bailouts necessary and where should money be going?

When Life Gives You Lemons Make Lemonade! BUT When Life Gives You MS and You Take Avonex-You Better Run Like Hell!

Yes, we have all been told when life is not going so good, "when life gives you lemons, make lemonade." Hope that theory works for most of you because just what if you are like me and hate lemonade? A: Make lemon cookies and drink Dr.Pepper. Not a good combination but oh well. I can't say I like having to accept something other than a good outcome when it comes to dealing with "life" and an undesired situation. For some it could be losing a job, finding out about an illness, a paycut, having to move unexpectedly, etc...etc. but be reminded that most of the time, our new situation could always be much worse. That is the only thing that keeps me going and I guess is why I make them damn lemon cookies from the lemon!(lol)

I have pretty much come to handle most things thrown my way but when MS decided to have a courtship with me and I was put on Avonex, I found out that I was a talented runner and should have been in the Olympics. I swear this weekly injection has got to be the mother of all shots and when I say it hurts like hell, it hurts like hell! First of all it's an IM injection (goes into the muscle) so don't think I am whining from just a simple shot. Just the sight of the needle size is enough to make anyone's palms sweaty. I am not afraid nor do I dread any injection like I do Avonex!

Tonight is Friday and for many that means relaxation or a night out but for Sarah, that means "Nightmare on My Body." The real torture is the side effects that accompany the shot and for 24 hours I still feel the effects. Achy, sore...just miserable. Thankfully for most Avonex users the side effects cease after several injections but I couldn't be that lucky. BUT (yes there is always a but) Avonex is a wonderful MS drug so I dare not complain and knowing that there are those out there who can't afford this drug, I thank God for it and for being blessed with insurance to provide it for me. I have learned to do as I try to do with everything else and find the good in it.

I love humor and I must admit that the run from the injection has been crazy sometimes. My husband has come to learn that when it's shot time to not listen to me say, can I talk to you for a minute because I become very talkative just to try to make him forget what we're supposed to be doing...my shot. Have you ever seen a child at the grocery store acting up? You know the one holding on to mom's leg crying and she's trying to walk away but he's holding on and being dragged slightly? Don't act like your child hasn't done that...ha-ha. Anyway I have been like that child holding on to Adam's leg for dear life in order to keep Adam from getting the injection ready but for some reason I haven't mastered that trickery yet. It only works for about 2 minutes. Dang it. Even my mom has had a hard time with me and Avonex. I would simply disappear when she went to get the injection...forgetting I had to return and yes, she'd be waiting with the needle in hand. MS sucks soooo badly but then I always have funny stories to fall back on. Some I shouldn't share but what the heck, right? You'll hear some of them off and on.

Anyway I dislike Fridays but if I made it to Friday then that is something to be happy about! No matter what your lemons are, laugh at them if you can. (Usually after the lemonade has been made.) Somethings we just have to accept and deal with. If I feel pain....thank God because parts of my body are numb. If I cry....I never cry alone. So really, what is there to HATE about Fridays. I am waiting for the nurse now to come with my injection but in the meantime I am going to sit here, think happy thoughts and know everything is going to be okay. As my husband always says- tomorrow is a new day!

My husband always says I have enough clothes to clothe a 3rd world country. I insist that is nothing but exaggeration, however I must admit I have way too much when it comes to clothing. If I wore everything I own, I would never wear the same thing twice for about two years
and like most of you, I also have jeans, suits, dresses, etc. still with tags on them. I am sure I will never fit in them but continue to be denial and claim that my fat loss fairy godmother is going to come out the wood works soon and I'll be a size 5 again. Who am I fooling? I even have an excuse for holding onto all my clothes bought too large and it is that I'm gaining weight and eventually will be in those clothes. Truth is I am not gaining or losing and that is as far as my clothes collection,too. I refuse to get rid of anything and at the same time I am not buying any new clothes.

My poor husband has tried convincing me I don't need every item I have BUT last week while at the library I ran into a book on the shelf titled ' The One Hundred A Guide To The Pieces Every Stylish Woman Must Own'. It was just the weapon I needed to fight back and win my argument of why I needed everything in my closets, his closets, my drawers, his drawers, etc...etc. (yes, clothes are everywhere in our house and they are mine)

This book by Nina Garcia is absolutely fabulous. I expected it to mention the usual items (jeans, yoga pants, etc..etc) but she was very specific and went above and beyond. Because Nina is a Style Editor, I knew I could trust I was getting THE Best Fashion Advice around so I quickly pounced into this book. Not only does she include clothing, accessories, etc. but she speaks of non-clothing items such as monogram stationary, mad money, jewelry pouches, items which are so vital for a woman to possess but many don't realize it nor own most of the items until picking up this book. For every clothing item, Nina is specific in the type, color, style (sometimes the brand) and even tells you "why" that piece is important and it's role in fashion.

Most books where the title is somewhat numerical is a book of lists but The One Hundred is alphabetical. For example, under B you will also find a page on Black Opaque Tights. Even has a little history but she does such and also has tips all throughout the book. She just helped me justify everything I own and plead my case how I am neglecting my fashion sense in other ways. Good thing Christmas is right around the corner. For those ladies you know who you "think" have everything, 'The One Hundred' is fantastic book choice for Christmas for you to give them and don't forget to get a copy for yourself.

Although 1971 was back in the Ice Age...lol...I don't even think I was even born when this song was written but I always remember those words so well..."one of these days these boots will walk all over you". Just a cute phrase but now for me, that is a phrase of power and strength. See, I have multiple sclerosis. We call it the MonSter for reasons only we would understand and it has been trying to get the best of me because in the past two years it has quickly progressed. I have been in and out of a wheelchair and believe me, it is a real confidence buster but I tried to find something to keep me a little upbeat about being in a chair and so I teased my husband that if he could keep me up with the latest and sexiest shoes and boots, I would be okay because I prefer people comment about my shoes rather than being sympathetic and sad seeing me in my chair. Oh, and when I fall, I make sure the shoes are in the air. Don't want them to get dirty....lol seriously, again so they'll see my shoes and not my big butt on the ground. It is really no laughing matter but somehow I have to remain in good spirits so this helped until recently when I found myself in a chair perhaps for good this time.

I have been in a Rehabilitation Hospital for almost four weeks now hoping I can get out of this chair but very little luck but don't think I haven't put a one hell of a fight and will keep fighting. Tonite for some reason the song ran through my head and I figured subconsciously I am probably thinking it's time to sweeten up the hubby again for some new sexy boots. Since I never knew all the words to that song, I looked up the lyrics and got an appreciation for the last phrase- "Are you ready boots? Start walkin!" For me that means I can't give up, just gotta fight harder and WALK!

I am writing this blog hoping it will help someone else know that whatever you are going through, use your boots and walk all over what it is that is your obstacle. It could be an illness, it could be depression, it could be a bad relationship with friends or family....but whatever it is...go conquer it. Although I speak of my shoes and boots, my true boots are my attitude. Stick with me long enough and you'll see sometimes I am down,too but be encouraged and with the right attitude-fight for what you want. Take back what is yours and for those who have something where there is no cure like MS, cancer, etc. as long as we remain hopeful, keep trying to smile and don't let our condition take our mind, we still win in the end! Well that's my simple thought for the day.
